Andy Johnson's battalion was originally written in GLTM on an Indy® workstation for the third IndiZone contest, and separately as a
virtual reality piece in the CAVETM for the EVE4 art exhibit at the Electronic Visualization Lab (EVL) in Chicago. The CAVE is a multi-person, room-sized, high-resolution virtual reality environment developed by the EVL. After the demise of GL,
Andy rewrote battalion in OpenGL®, adding in a few more features that didn't
make the original release. Having an OpenGL version allowed battalion
to easily venture far from its
Silicon Graphics home, and now there are ports of battalion for SunOS, Solaris, HP-UX, Linux,
AIX, and Macintosh systems.

Andy Johnson is currently finishing up the second year of his post-doc at the EVL at the University of Illinois at Chicago, where he will start as an assistant professor in the fall of '97. He is currently working on ways to improve collaboration in virtual reality environments. Take a peek at Andy's personal page to see what he's up to month by month. |
